Former Presidents William J. Clinton and George W. Bush have come together to support the earthquake recovery efforts in Haiti Please visit http://www.clintonbushhaitifund.org and make a donation. Below is the message from the Former Presidents on the home page of http://www.clintonbushhaitifund.org

“On January 12, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti just outside the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The devastation – in lives lost, property destroyed, and families displaced – is immense.

At the request of President Obama, we are partnering to help the Haitian people reclaim their country and rebuild their lives.

Our immediate priority is to save lives. The critical needs in Haiti are great, but they are also simple: food, water, shelter, and first-aid supplies. The best way concerned citizens can help is to donate funds that will go directly to supplying these material needs.

Through the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, we will work to provide immediate relief and long-term support to earthquake survivors. We will channel the collective goodwill around the globe to help the people of Haiti rebuild their cities, their neighborhoods, and their families.

We ask each of you to give what you can to help ensure the people of Haiti can build back stronger and better than ever.

Both of us have personally witnessed the tremendous generosity and goodwill of the American people and of our friends around the world to help in times of great need. There is no greater rallying cry for our common humanity than witnessing our neighbors in distress. And, like any good neighbor, we have an obligation and desire to come to their aid.

Thank you for taking the time to visit, and we hope you will donate to this worthwhile cause. The people of Haiti now need our assistance more than ever.”

The Athens Area Community Foundation has awarded grants totaling $25,000 to help 14 local organizations address needs in the areas of youth development, economic & workforce development, access to health care, and building community. The grants, ranging between $625 and $3,375, are part of the second award cycle undertaken by AACF, which began operation last year as a vehicle for philanthropic investment, meeting critical needs, and engaging families and businesses in strategic grantmaking.

The foundation issued a call in July for applications and received 49 requests totaling $195,595.71. Withonly $25,000 to award this fall, the foundation board members had to make difficult choices. “All of the applicants are addressing serious issues in the community,” said Steve Jones, foundation chairman.

Decisions on awarding grants were based in part on whether the proposals helped address poverty, improve quality of life, increase access to community resources, attract volunteer support, address the underlying causes of local problems, and build the applicant organization’s capacity and sustainability.

Based on those criteria, AACF has generously chosen to give a grant of $1000 to support the 2010 College Can program. AACF’s grant will help leverage funding for seventy-five 5th grade students to participate in the Jekyll classes which incorporate science, math, social studies, language arts and history in small teaching groups.

We at TPF feel so fortunate that AACF feels our program is worthy of its support. As the local center for philanthropy, AACF connects individuals, families, corporations, and private foundations in the Athens area to the critical issues facing our community. Please visit there website at http://www.athensareacf.org/ to find out more about the Athens Area Community Foundation’s great works.

For most of the past 11 years, the East Atlanta Kids Club has met at Brownwood Park Recreation Center but due to the city’s budget woes Brownwood has been closed - now numbering among 22 of Atlanta’s 33 recreation centers that are closed indefinitely.

“I wish more children could have… a place where individuals are still cared for and there is a family atmosphere that is good for children. . . .not just a place to play ball [but] a community meeting place where lifelong friends have been made, young boys have grown into men, and athletic skills have been honed.” – Excerpts from “The Ball Fields”, Written by Kyle Burnat, English 114a, Yale University October 16, 2001

Since our inception, TPF has partnered with the East Atlanta Kids Club (EAKC) to provide disadvantaged youths in the community recreational and educational opportunities. For most of the past 11 years, the EAKC has met at Brownwood Park Recreation Center but due to the city’s budget woes Brownwood has been closed – now numbering among 22 of Atlanta’s 33 recreation centers that are closed indefinitely. This has left many children in Atlanta with no place to go after school or in the summer time. Fortunately, the EAKC has kept going, finding space to meet in a local church. But the church has limited classroom space and no green space in which the kids can play and exercise.

In order for their program to thrive again, they need to get back into the recreation center and to the large park and recreational facilities that surround it. Before moving back and resuming program activities in the center, the city is requiring EAKC to have commitments to cover the cost of utilities and maintenance for one year – $16,160 . Currently they have commitments for about half of that amount.
